Crop Production
Crops
On our farm we try to use a holistic approach to growing crops. We grow them not only to be profitable, but also to improve soil structure, increase organic matter, and decrease pests. Being responsible now will help us as we look forward and try to achieve our goals for the future.
We grow a wide variety of crops, including:

Wheat Canola
Durum Grazing corn
Malt barley Oats
Feed barley Triticale

Fertilizers
We use fertilizer every year on our annual crops but work with our agronomist and use the 4R approach:

Apply the right form of fertilizer at the right rate, in the right place, at the right time. Read more about about this type of nutrient stewardship here.

This helps us to optimize our production and protects the environment from unnecessary release of the products. We also spend the extra money to use products that are better for the environment, like ESN Smart Nitrogen.

Pesticides
Pesticides are used to control a wide range of pests, including weeds, insects and disease. Every year in every field we evaluate the need for pesticides and, when necessary, apply them according to their labels to ensure the least amount of effect to the environment and non-target species.
We have people who have trained and received their Pesticide Applicator Certificate - which is a government regulated course that teaches you how to be safe and how to correctly apply pesticides. It is important to us to maintain the purity of our fields but also reduce our impact on the world around us.
Agricultural Carbon Offsets
By participating in the Alberta Agricultural Carbon Offset program, we have adopted an agricultural practice improvement (conservation tillage) to create carbon offsets for trade in Alberta’s carbon market, reduce our carbon footprint and realize long-term benefits for our farm operation. The goal of conservation tillage is to minimize soil and water loss by omitting tillage operations whenever possible.
